Custom Milling & Consulting LLC’s engineers have been putting their expertise to the test by designing new machines and technology to meet your wet milling needs. CMC has applied that knowledge to all their manufactured machinery from double planetary mixers, to horizontal mills, to basket mills.

Basket mills also known as batch mills have been around in the milling industry for decades and are still in high demand because of the advantages that this one single machine has to offer the wet milling/grinding industry.

The design of the machine has seals, pumps, hoses, shaft bushing and is equipped with stainless steel parts, making it possible for easy clean up and rapid change over between products.  For example if you are using white paint and want to mix red right after, you simply lift the basket, move the tank, spray down the basket, and submerge it into a tank of red.  Maintenance of this machine is a fraction of the price compared to majority of the milling equipment and machinery available.

The way this milling machine works is very simple and not at all complex. The basket chamber is filled with media that is agitated by a shaft with pegs on the end that rotates within the basket. On a separate shaft there is an impeller that rotates at a different rate or they will simultaneously spin at the same rate depending on the material. This helps to provide even circulation of the liquid with in the tank.

The vortex and centrifugal force that is created takes the material and pulls it in through the slits of the screen while the media breaks up particles and disperses them throughout the liquid. Premixing, dispersion and shearing are all done in one process saving time, while increasing production.

CMC will build a basket mill that is equipped with different size baskets, media and blades. It all depends on how fine of particle you want to achieve and the type of material you are mixing with in the tank.

Applications include:

  • Paints
  • Coatings
  • Inks
  • Pigments
  • Dyes

CMC offers companies the ability to come tour our facility and run a test batch of their formulation on our basket mill in our lab testing facilities. Our expert technicians will take the time to talk you through the process and provide analysis for your review.
