In most industries, wet milling means reducing material to sizes in the low micron to nano-size range. The size of the media affects the end result of the milling operation. Small media (beads or spheres) inside the vessel are activated by a high-speed agitator shaft to separate the individual particles. Kinetic energy acts on the solids suspended in a liquid (slurry) to tear them apart (shearing) or crush them, reducing them in size. The particles are dispersed in the liquid and are ready for use or can be dried and separated for use in other products.
Selecting the right media mill for a wet-grinding process is very important, and not always simple.
Vertical mills are used worldwide, but they tend to be limited in media volume charge and have fluidizing issues related to the use of finer grinding media. In general, they cannot accommodate as much media as horizontal mills. Another challenge is in obtaining very fine particle sizes. Traditional vertical mills and ball mills are often limited to a finished particle size of approximately 5 microns, which can be achieved only with careful attention to media size.
Horizontal mills, on the other hand, have certain characteristics that are better suited to wet grinding, including:
