Custom Milling & Consulting LLC (CMC), headquartered in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania USA, is an industry leader in wet milling technologies.

We manufacture horizontal milling machines for customers in Italy and throughout the world who are seeking finer particle sizes, cleaner dispersions and higher product quality in their manufacturing processes.

Milling of products, such as ores, chemical substances, ceramic raw materials, paint, inks and coatings, is achieved by the wet milling or dry milling process. Small beads or spheres inside the vessel are activated by a high-speed agitator shaft to separate the individual particles.

When the agitator rotates, it transmits kinetic energy to the media. When the material is pumped through the mill, this energy acts on the solids suspended in a liquid (slurry) to tear them apart (shearing) or crush them, reducing them in size. The particles are dispersed in the liquid and are ready for use or can be dried and separated for use in other products.

In terms of state-of-the-art wet milling equipment, the CMC Supermill PLUS™ horizontal media mill is equipped with the latest milling technology and innovative design features. This workhorse media mill offers efficiency, flexibility and economy for the most demanding applications.

The CMC Batch Mill offers efficient, one tank milling of a wide range of formulations, due to its dual shaft/dual speed control configuration.  CMC Double Planetary Mixers are the ideal choice for mixing and kneading viscous pastes, gently blending shear sensitive formulations or drying and granulating powders.

CMC’s processes for particle size reduction in solids contribute to paints, dyes, specialty coatings, epoxies, adhesives, sealants, ceramics, solders, fluxes and catalysts.

Our services cater to a wide variety of markets, such as the automotive, marine, agricultural, fertilizer, electronics, and specialty chemical industry, among others. Our multiple mills, mixers and high-speed dispersion units can be customized and fine-tuned to fit every situation.

Some advantages of wet milling in comparison to dry milling include:

  • Smaller particle size than dry milling
  • Narrower particle size distribution
  • Higher rotational speeds
  • Good homogenization
  • As much as 300% reduction in process time
  • Media can be as small as .25 mm and as large as 2 mm
  • Greater yield with little product loss
  • Maximum color strength and gloss durability
  • Minimal contamination and clean-up

The wet milling process may be more energy-intensive and labor-intensive, but it is capable of reducing a product into more components and into and into finer particles in the micron & submicron (or nanometer) particle size range. This allows for the production of a greater variety of byproducts and improved physical properties that can offset equipment cost and generate additional revenue.

For instance, some materials exhibit dramatically changed physical properties when they are reduced to nanoparticles.

For example, organic pigments, when processed to sub-micron sizes, offer greater color strength than those produced by conventional grinding to one or two microns. This allows the client to use less pigment in an ink, paint, or dye, thereby reducing production costs.

CMC is committed to providing innovative wet milling technology to our customers.
