Milling of products, such as ores, chemical substances, ceramic raw materials, paint, inks and coatings, is achieved by the wet milling or dry milling process.

Custom Milling & Consulting LLC (CMC), headquartered in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania USA, is a global leader in wet milling technologies and manufactures horizontal milling machines for customers in Mexico and throughout the world who are seeking cleaner dispersions, finer particle sizes and higher product quality from wet milling.

Wet milling, also called wet media milling, is a process in which particles are dispersed in a liquid by shearing, by impact or crushing, or by attrition. A mill is charged with media (small beads or spheres) and activated by a high-speed agitator shaft to separate the individual particles. When the agitator rotates, it transmits kinetic energy to the media. When the material is pumped through the mill, this energy acts on the solids suspended in a liquid (slurry) to tear them apart (shearing) or crush them, reducing them in size. The particles are simultaneously dispersed in the liquid which is then ready for use or can be dried and separated for use in other products.

Some advantages of horizontal media mills in wet milling include:

  • Highly efficient use of small amounts of media
  • Media is distributed evenly throughout the vessel
  • Media can be as small as .25 mm and as large as 2 mm
  • Greater yield with little product loss
  • Maximum color strength and gloss durability
  • As much as 300% reduction in process time
  • 5% reduction in raw material costs
  • Minimal contamination, clean-up, and solvent loss
  • Resists abrasion
  • Relatively low operation, control and maintenance requirements

Although the wet milling process may be more energy-and labor-intensive, it can reduce a product into more components, and into finer particles in the micron & submicron (or nanometer) particle size range, allowing for the production of a greater variety of byproducts and improved physical properties. These additional by-products can offset the expense of the equipment and generate additional revenue.

An example of profitable by-products involves the production of ethanol from corn.

Wet milling/grinding can break the corn into its four main components: starch, germ, fiber, and protein. When broken down, the germ can be used to make corn oil, and germ and fiber can be used in feed products for livestock. Starch that is not utilized in the ethanol can be sold for high fructose corn syrup. And CO2 gas that collects during fermentation can be sold for carbonation to dry ice or drink manufacturers.

With more than 25 years of expertise in process engineering and dispersion technology, CMC manufactures mixers and wet grinding media mills, including basket mills/batch mills and other process equipment, that can be customized to a client’s specific needs.

For instance, the CMC Supermill PLUS™ horizontal media mill is equipped with the latest milling technology and pioneering design features.
